Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Malnutrition remains a significant public health issue in Lokoja Local Government, Kogi State, where many families face challenges related to food insecurity, poor dietary practices, and limited access to essential nutritional resources. According to recent reports, malnutrition is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among vulnerable groups, particularly children, pregnant women, and the elderly (Ogunleye & Olatunji, 2023). In many rural areas of Lokoja, inadequate nutrition has been exacerbated by poverty, lack of education, and insufficient healthcare infrastructure. Print media, especially local newspapers, have the potential to play a crucial role in combating malnutrition by educating the public about proper nutrition, available food programs, and health practices. Newspapers can serve as a platform to disseminate knowledge about the importance of a balanced diet, the risks of malnutrition, and how to access nutritional resources (Adeyemo, 2023). Moreover, they can provide insights into governmental initiatives aimed at alleviating malnutrition and promote community-driven solutions to improve food security. Local media can also highlight the work of NGOs, health organizations, and community groups in addressing malnutrition. The role of print media in influencing public awareness and behavior regarding nutrition practices has not been fully explored, making this study critical in understanding how local newspapers can support efforts to combat malnutrition in Lokoja.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite various governmental and non-governmental efforts to combat malnutrition in Lokoja, the prevalence of undernutrition and other related health issues remains high. While print media has the potential to inform and educate the public about these issues, its actual contribution to addressing malnutrition is not well understood. Research indicates that local newspapers in Lokoja often report on nutrition-related topics, but there is limited exploration into how these reports translate into behavior change or increased awareness among the population. Furthermore, the effectiveness of print media in reaching rural communities, where malnutrition is most prevalent, remains unclear. This study seeks to address the gap in literature by examining the role of print media in combating malnutrition in Lokoja, exploring how local newspapers influence public knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to nutrition.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in its potential to highlight the role of print media in addressing malnutrition in Lokoja. It will contribute to understanding how local newspapers can influence public awareness and behavior around nutrition issues. The findings of this research can inform policy-makers, health organizations, and media practitioners on how to use print media more effectively to combat malnutrition. By demonstrating the potential of print media to support community health interventions, the study can also help shape future communication strategies aimed at improving public health outcomes.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on print media coverage of malnutrition in Lokoja Local Government, Kogi State, and its influence on public awareness and behavior. It will analyze articles, advertisements, and features published in local newspapers. The study is limited by factors such as the accessibility of rural populations, potential biases in newspaper coverage, and the challenge of directly linking media coverage to behavior change.
